옥탑방 왕세자 [Rooftop Prince]
Not sure if you guys noticed but I have added 2 new things to my blog :D
1) Finally decided to revive my twitter (so I don't flood people on facebook with my nonsense lol) which you can see on the left sidebar. Feel free to follow me if you are asking for daily doses of my very random thoughts
2) A new tab called 'Kdrama Recommendations' on top bar. People around me know I am a K-entertainment fan. So let me just share my thoughts (spoilers included, I don't care :P) about the shows I have watched. Regardless how these shows fare in their home country, they will definitely be better than our all-too-often propaganda type dramas here. Either that or our dramas are too PG.
Point 2 was also in response to the latest drama that I have finished
옥탑방 왕세자 aka Rooftop Prince
Starring DBSK's Micky Yoochun, Han Ji Min, Jung Yoo Mi, Lee Tae Sung
And the other 3 power rangers LOL. Lee Min Ho (er not the City Hunter one), Jung Suk Won, Choi Woo Shik
I am going to separate this entry with random photos otherwise it would be too wordy.
I watched this show partly because of Yoochun, not that I was a fan of his but because of his role in 성균관 스캔들 (Sungkyunkwan Scandal) which I have blogged about together with two other shows, Obs & Gyn (cried buckets) and Beethoven Virus
A tiny synopsis (grabbed from wiki):
Tae-mu (Lee Tae-sung), after killing his lost cousin in the U.S, returns to Korea claiming that his cousin, Tae-yong (Micky Yoochun), could not be found in New York. Meanwhile, Tae-mu has been having a secret affair with Se-na (Jung Yoo-mi), who in turn runs into her long-lost stepsister Park-ha (Han Ji-min), who has been long lost and adopted to U.S because of Se Na.
Two years after Tae-yong's disappearance, four men dressed in Joseon era garments, fall onto Park-ha's rooftop house. Homeless and having nowhere to go, the four men decide to stick with Park-ha. Their leader claims that he is the Crown Prince of Joseon (Micky Yoochun), along with his entourage Song Man-bo (Lee Min-ho), Woo Yong-sool (Jung Suk-won), and Do Chi-san (Choi Woo-shik). One day, Crown Prince Lee Gak sees Se-na who is the spitting image of his beloved wife, who was found drowned in the 18th century. He is convinced the two are reincarnations of each other.
Meanwhile, company president Yeo (Ban Hyo-jung) mistakes Lee Gak for her grandson, Yong Tae Yong, because of their exact same appearance, and believes that her long lost grandson had finally returned. Lee Gak realizes that he has time traveled 300 years to 2012, Seoul, to search for the truth behind the mysterious death of the late Crown Princess. In order to approach Se-na, who is also President Yeo's personal assistant, Lee Gak pretends that he is Tae-yong. Tae-mu, believes that he killed his cousin in New York, feels threatened when he hears the news that Tae-yong has returned and started working in the company.
Hmm oops not so tiny afterall.
Given that 4 power rangers (can't help it, it's the tracksuit!!) have traveled into a world 300 years later, the initial episodes were really hilarious as they tried to adapt to the modern world like brushing teeth, riding a bicycle and differentiating between an automated door and a lift. Just look:
P/S I got my cousin hooked after this clip. Well done Cher!
She went on and tell me that the costumes in the show have some meaning.

I wasn't able to stop watching towards the end because that's when more and more secrets were uncovered. The nice play of karma and reincarnation would really work well with people who believes in a second-life or something. It's a concept that fascinates and scares me at the same time.
The other concept is time travel of course. It makes me wonder if my other self is living simultaneously alongside with me, in another dimension. That it is still living as I am writing. That time has a dimension and not a one-way track.
Korean shows unlike the olden times (think Stairways to Heaven) are not that sadistic anymore. Especially so when it is a show starring idols, it's always a happy ending these days which I liked :D
I think the best part about this show is that at least one part of the ending is expected, that is the Crown Prince went back to the Joseon era.
Yes it's expected.
Yes I still cry buckets.
The setting was way too beautiful for him to leave her like that.
(ok I got cry also when there were scenes that hinted at his departure).
This is a show that left me laughing and crying all at the same time in its final episodes.
It did let me realise something though.
Because I imagined it happening to me
It made me realise how important my bf is to me
I don't usually say these words out but I just want to say I really appreciate you being by my side ;')
I wouldn't be able to write more without spoiling the whole plot
So essentially this show is for people who
a) appreciate humor
b) wants something not so serious, to watch and relax after work
c) the romantic ones
d) the emotional ones
e) fans of these actors and actresses of course!
Cher's ratings
9/10
everything was brilliant, the actors/actresses interaction, the background music, the bitch level of those bad people, the plot was especially well-written!
but it is still a 9 because I still don't want them to separate *stubborn*
because it left one person with only memories... :'(
Where to watch with English Subs?
